NBC/Universal

Case Study

The Purpose

NBC/Universal is one of the largest media companies in the world. With over 15 channels, the advertising department has one of the largest ad media portals in the industry. Originally developed in the 90s, the portal was in need of a major upgrade.

THE PROCESS AND END RESULT

The NBC/Universal extranet is used internally by the peacock network itself, its family of channels (Bravo, Univision, MSNBC and 10 others) as well as all advertisers for all stations. Needless to say, the system is a major hub for the lifeblood (advertising) of the company and its usage, or rather lack there of, was a major issue when the Toi team was brought on board. The ex-net was extremely cluttered, scattered and simply, in the clients words, "a mess." The menu(s) were scattered all over for each sub-site. The sub-sites themselves weren't defined by enough visual cues, hence the end user would too easily get lost in the wrong section of the ex-net. The site was completely HTML based and not cross browser compatible.

Toi went through a stringent UX/UI process to create a design framework which exceeded client goals. The next step was created all the potential widgets, assets and content styles to accommodate each channel and properties needs. Once each department was satisfied, the team marked up all designs in strict XHTML/CSS compliant pages in preparation for implementation. With a successful launch, the system is used by thousands of people everyday to make the network ad system flow.
